The Sea The Mountains The Forest The City The Plain

“Sometimes it’s the sea, other times the mountains, often it was the forest, the city, the plain too, I’ve flirted with the plain too, I’ve given myself up for dead all over the place, of hunger, of old age, murdered, drowned, and then for no reason, of tedium, nothing like breathing your last to put new life in you…”

Texts for Nothing, Samuel Beckett

The Sea The Mountains The Forest The City The Plain is written by Matthew Freeman. The play was originally produced in October of 2019 at the Brick Theater in Williamsburg Brooklyn under the direction of David Cote. The play was performed by Robert Honeywell. Sound Design was by Chris Chappell, Lighting Design by Nicholas Houfek and Scenic Design by Kerry Lee Chipman. The stage manager was Jodi Witherall.

What you are about to hear is from a live performance recorded by Daniel McKleinfeld.

This is not pristine audio: it was recorded with a mic designed for record keeping, not broadcast. While we’re aware this is an era of audio made with perfection and care, we hope you’ll enjoy the sound for its imperfect flavor, and appreciate the rare feeling of overhearing a performance as it was performed.

The Listeners

"Matthew Freeman’s The Listeners boasts a swinging, Aleister Crowley naughtiness. It’s a Lynchian fable set in a bed-and-breakfast where time has a habit of looping back on itself. Imagine The Wicker Man sprinkled with Pinter: dark and silly, silly and dark." - Helen Shaw, Time Out New York

The Listeners is a surreal drama about memory and ritual. A family that runs an ad-hoc bed and breakfast. Two drifters arrive at their doorstep.

The Listeners was originally produced in 2015 at the Brick Theater in Brooklyn, New York under the direction of Michael Gardner. It was developed by Matthew Freeman, Michael Gardner, and the cast, and is written by Matthew Freeman.

In this newly recorded cast album, the original cast reprises their roles: Moira Stone as Sistine, Jay Leibowitz as Colm, Robert Honeywell as Elliot, Sarah K. Lippmann as Marion, Stephanie Willing as Careen, and Heather E. Cunningham as Augusta. Sound design, editing and co-production by Jay Leibowitz.
